Kayaking tips for beginners?

July 31st, 2010 |

Hello, Im currently looking into taking up kayaking as a hobby. I have done it a couple of times with my family, but nothing too advanced. I live in the Miami area and was hoping to see if anyone could give me some tips about where I could kayak. Any ideas would be welcomed. Im looking for the local "hot spots" and what the basic essentials are when taking kayaing up as a part of my lifestyle. I am not too familiar with the ocean so whatever tools, equipment, and so forth that you could suggest, I would greatly appreaciate it.

Thanks for your input! :)

Kayaking Gear Advice & Know-How?

July 29th, 2010 |

1. Sea kayaking gear - I won’t own a boat for a while, but would like recommendations for rescue equipment (throw ropes, tow lines, rescue PFD’s), types of paddles and boats you like most, types of sprayskirts you like most…anything else you think is essential other than dry bags.

2. Whitewater - love it. Looking to buy an affordable helmet and sprayskirt that will last for years. Neoprene skirt is out. Recommendations?

3. Resources for learning everything there is to know about sea kayaks (shape, length, type), navigating on the ocean, tides, stuff guides and experts know. Books too.

I want to know the ins and outs of kayaks. I have a decent knowledge on whitewater - would like to know more about sea. Enlighten me.

2. {y+2x=-10

3. Kayak Kottage charges to rent a kayak plus per hour for lessons. Power Paddles charges for rentals plus per hour for lessons. For what number of hours is the cost of equipment and lessons the same for each company?

What kind of vehicle should I buy?

July 23rd, 2010 |

I currently own a jeep wrangler, but I’m looking for something better on gas, and won’t make my insurance rates skyrocket (my jeep is a 93, so I get a low rate, but id like something from this decade) I regularly carry sports equipment, fishing poles, and a kayak around. Putting a rack on the top is definitely an option for the kayak. I’m a 20 yr old girl, so I still would like it to be relatively cute. Biggest point is high MPG. Any suggestions would be appreciated: my financial cap is 14000.

Anyone been in a situation like this?

July 19th, 2010 |

Would you be upset if your boyfriend made plans for the two of you to spend the only day you had off together and he told you later that night that he had a change of plans and is now going kayaking with his friend. That friend is a girl that is spending the night with him and sleeping in his bed. They have been friends for a long time and I don’t mind them sleeping together except I can’t go over there after I get off work now because there is no room for me in the bed because of her and she is also the reason that I will have to go another couple of days without seeing him because of our work schedules. Am I overreacting to this situation? I don’t want to seem as if I don’t want him to spend time with his friends, but I expect to spend time with him too. Oh and I can’t go with them because I don’t have the right equipment or a kayak.

What is the most fuel-efficient, rugged vehicle for a very active lifestyle?

July 4th, 2010 |

I’ve always driven Jeeps because I like the flat, long bed in the back (my back seats are always folded down) that hold my camping equipment, kayak, snowboard, tools, tubes, surfboard, bikes, or whatever else I’m lugging that day. I also sleep in the back on long road trips as a safer alternative to a tent (I can lock the doors when I am alone). I’m not a fan of putting my surfboard and other sports gear on top of my car because of road debris. I live in snowy New England and love 4WD…and I go off-roading, so I actually use my SUV as an SUV. But I want something better for the environment and with better gas milage. I’ve considered Subaru Outback, Ford Escape Hybrid, Volvo Cross Country (but this is a bit $$ for me). Any thoughts? Anyone is a similar dilemma? Thanks for your input!

What can Indiana Tourists in Sacramento do? May 23th to June 7th?

July 2nd, 2010 |

Need ideas for my houseguests to do in the coming weeks. They are both young women, nearly 30, and I’m (quite) a bit older and working everyday. They’ll be on their own most days.

I need to offer suggestions for low cost adventures within half a day’s travel. They have a car, camping equipment and very little money! They have equipment for fishing and camping. I don’t even know what fish are in season or where they could catch them! Boat rentals, kayaking, etc. would be great if I only knew where to send them. They are from Indiana so the natural sights, sounds and creatures of California are very entertaining if I only knew where they’ll find the greatest fun.

Your ideas would be appreciated.

I need some tips on white water kayaking.?

June 26th, 2010 |

I’ve always been interested in whitewater kayaking and now I’ve finally decided to take it seriously and get into big time. I don’t really know much about the equipment and things needed, so I figured I would just post this and see what some you people have to say. I was planning on treating myself to a new kayak for my birthday that’s coming up soon (March 12 YAY!!) so I was just wondering what brands and what materials should I be searching for with the new kayak. Basically, I just need any info that can be given to a beginner. Thanks in advance guys :]

How can I be more comfortable in a kayak?

June 20th, 2010 |

I live right next to the potomac river, during the summer I work at a place that will gladly lend me good equipment, and I have plenty of oppertunities to join a group of experienced-to-beginning kayakers while they putz around the river and play after work. The river is beautiful and its a great way to unwind and I would be much more helpful to the company if I ever worked a kayaking program (as opposed to being a tall, well-behaved camper who can cook). But I hate the feeling of capsizing because water floods my nose and it seems like I’m choking. I’ve never had a problem getting out after flipping on purpose. We do very little that would cause someone to flip and normally go to tiny rapids that we let 9-year-old kids swim for fun, but the anticipation of winding up upside down underwater is all I can think about and it keeps me from trying things that the other beginners try.

Any tips to desensitize myself to this feeling? My brain knows that flipping is no big deal and it takes me 5 seconds absolute max to get out or 15 seconds to wait for someone to help me roll up, but once that choking feeling hits me I can’t think straight at all.

What kayak is best for sea touring multiple days ?

June 8th, 2010 |

I have been looking at the WS tsunami 170 pro. A transistional touring boat. But there are so many choices out there.I’m looking to paddle Glacier and Resurection Bay in Alaska for 2 - 4 weeks. And am also interested in a trip to Isle Royal in Lake Superior.I live in the Pacific North West and of course will want a good weekender.I am 5′ 8" and 200 lbs. 10 inch shoe and with mediocre kayak paddling skills. This is a one time one boat purchase and I dont want to have to keep upgrading like I have with backpacking equipment. Much of the reviews on the internet are simply plugs for certain brands or fishing trips for reviews.Someone out there has taken the trips I’m aiming for. Please help !! I’ve tried some at local retailers but feel I’m always being fitted for there selection only. And I dont believe you can really know a boat in a few hours. Thanx

Warm/hot weather kayak rooftop storage?

June 6th, 2010 |

Okay… spring has sprung and it’s about time to get the boats back into the water.
There are a few lakes and rivers that are a lot closer to work than my house is. I’d rather try to bring the kayak with me than drive to work, go home strap the boat on and then drive back. Otherwise it would probably be one and a half hours of lost time, possibly two or more hours during the evening rush hour.
If I were to strap my plastic recreational boat onto the roof, then go to work and try to get some time on the water after work, is there anything I should do to ensure that it can survive the day in the direct sun?
The parking lot at work is gated, so it is the most secure place to leave it during the day. However, it is uncovered and treeless, so I cannot park in the shade.
Would having a cover on the boat itself be enough sun protection? Or should I double up on the protection by covering the covered boat as well? ( I’m thinking of using a kayak cover and then throw a tarp over that )
I am aware that loosening up the tie-downs will prevent pressure points as the kayak heats up in the sun, but would it start to droop as it softens up? I could also take it off of the rack and use my car as shade, along with a tarp. The only downside is that there are several deliveries to the shop a day and it would be fairly easy to pick up a loose boat and drive away.
Another option might be to borrow the bed of a pickup truck and cover it there. This would keep the whole boat supported instead of being held up by four little pads on the roof rack. I might also be able to put it on the ground under a truck - there are also a few redneck over-sized 4×4s. I’m not sure if the asphalt gets very hot, though.
I can’t bring it into the building, put possibly can stash it on the side of the building or under one of the equipment shelters we have. I would prefer not to have take it off and on more than necessary.
Whaddaya think? Is covering a covered boat enough sun protection?

River Running Kayak?

June 4th, 2010 |

I’m looking into buying a river running kayak or canoe. A friend told me that as a beginner, I should probablly buy a high side kayak or canoe. The only problem is that I need it to hold 320 pounds (I figure this is what it needs to hold with all equipment and myself). I want to begin on some class 2 and class 3+ rapids that are in my area and possiblly over time move to a class four rapid. Does any know of a good rig for me to use that has a larger closed cockpit ( I don’t want just an open canoe if possible to keep out water). If not, does anyone know if you can put an extra 20-25 pounds on a kayak’s weight restriction as long as I fit into said kayak? Any advice will help guys and an inflatable kayak/ canoe is not out of the question.

What inflatable kayak should I get?

May 31st, 2010 |

I am a complete novice and know zero about kayaks. I do know I need an inflatable kayak. I have been looking at advanced elements and innova etc. I am looking for 2 kayaks. One that is single, and has the ability for 3 day excursions. meaning I need space for equipment. In addition, I want a 2 person tandem kayak that can also do 3 day excursions with equipment etc.

Waters would be the colorado river (lower), where its just a lazy moving river where even power boats can easily go up and down. In addition for lake waters, and slow moving canals and rivers. Nothing above class ii.

Any help or direction would be nice. Thank you!
Thanks for the response. Reason for inflateable, is I don’t have any room to store a composite one, let alone two.

How should I write this Career Objective for my resume?

May 27th, 2010 |

The job is Coast Mountain Sports, it’s an outdoor specialty store that provides canoes, kayaks, outdoor clothing, camping equipment. This is what I have for my career objective/Opening statement:

Position as a Sales Associate where understanding of outdoor recreation will help benefit customers. Can demonstrate exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (greet, consult, up-sale); build positive, effective customer relationships.

The part I’m focusing on is this line:

"
Position as a Sales Associate where understanding of outdoor recreation will help benefit customers."

The word recreation doesn’t seem to fit well, seeing from my description of the job, what would be a better word instead of recreation? I thought of "sports" but that’s too generalized.

Please help!
