Motorized Fishing Kayak 55lb

August 9th, 2011 |

I wanted to do some trolling for bass in the dams around Southern Qld, Australia, and considering I do quite intensive physical activity at work, I didn’t want the extra workout for 5-6 hours straight on the water paddling. So, after checking out a fair few options on youtube of the different set-ups, I came up with my personal set-up. I bought a 55lb electric motor, a 100ah marine battery with box and terminals on outside (battery fully enclosed), a battery charger, 130cm piece of 4” x 2″ hardwood (merbau is probably better), 2 U-bolts and drill bit to fit. All costing around 0AUD (US0). I cut the piece of wood to length, drilled the holes for the U-bolts making sure I could reach into my Kayak thru the rear storage hole and attach the nuts. Carved ruts into the wood where the top of the U-bolt would rest on the wood (sits flush and doesn’t move a bit). I got a bit lucky with the battery. I thought I was going to have to cut a hole into the back of the Kayak to make sure it was secure, but it sits nicely against the wood transom beam and the strap goes around the transom and battery box to hold it on really firm. It sits quite firm and doesn’t move at all on smooth waters. Have not tested in the ocean as yet. May attach a couple more straps around it when I finally make the trip into the ocean. The snapper are on the bite so that will be soon. Originally I thought the Kayak would lean a bit to the side the motor was on, but my Kayak is really wide (100cm between

Kayaking: What Do You Need Besides a Kayak?

July 30th, 2011 |

Kayaking: What Do You Need to Get Started? - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. I tell people that the initial package for kayaking is a kayak, a paddle, and a life jacket. All three of them are a necessity that you need when you kayak. Anything after that starts to become additional equipment that you an always purchase, but those three you need to have. Like the kayaks, life jackets come in a variety of different sizes and colors and shapes and things as well. But basically there are literally life jackets designed for kayakers. They have bigger arm holes, for being able to move your arms more. In some cases they have high reflectivity. They have soft straps so that when you are in a kayak and sitting, you don’t have these straps sticking up into your face. And they are literally designed for kayaking and different size people. All of them of course have to be Coast Guard approved and they are noted to be manufactured. So the life jacket is a very important thing to have. One thing you want to always remember is that you are going to have this is your hand every second of the time that you are paddling. So I sort of preach the fact that you should find something that is going to be comfortable for you to be able to handle all the time. That it will be the right length that it is suppose to be so that it meets your height. And also the materials themselves of what the paddles are made from varies just as much the materials for when you are buying a kayak. You can

Kayak Types for First Time Kayak Buyers

July 26th, 2011 |

Kayaking: What to Know When Buying a Kayak - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. My name is Steve Gibons and I am with Scappoose Bay Kayaking here in Oregon. We are an organization that has been here for about the last 11 years, and we are here to help people out in regards to buying kayaks. My understanding is that you would like to know a little bit about kayaks. And the first thing that we always ask people when they are interested in buying a boat is two things. What do you see yourself doing in the kayak? If you are just looking for something that you are going to use a couple times during the summer, well then of course you might not be interested in a larger investment. But if you find, which you will, that you really enjoy kayaking, then there is different degrees of kayaks that you might be interested in buying as well, and it can go right from the very beginning all the way to the more expensive boats. What I mean by that is, is in the early stages, a basic beginner kayak, is what we call a recreational kayak. A recreational kayak is a boat that has a large cockpit, which is what this opening is. It is very easy to get in and out of, it is adaptable to all sizes of kids and adults. It is very stable, it is relatively a little heavier than some other materials. It is made out of a plastic, what we call a milk bottle plastic or a polyethylene plastic, and to keep its structural integrity, because of the material, it has to be made very thick in order to stay

The girls kayaking on Lake Del Valle, CA ~ Hobie Oasis

July 12th, 2011 |

Not a pro video, just recording some family fun. We rented kayaks on Lake Del Valle from Sunrise Mountain Sports www.sunrisemountainsports.com They’re easy and quick to deal with and we had a lot of fun. Rentals included all safety gear and paddles. Bring your own camera, drink and snacks ! We tried out two different yaks, I took the Hobie Revolution out and the girls tried out the Hobie Oasis, approx. 09 / 10 models, both with foot powered Mirage drives of course. Two girls from Paris, Nathalie and Emmanuelle, they loved it, although for me now I have to compare some others, the Outback for one… I will say the Revolution with Turbo fins, albeit with some effort at first, was easy to settle into a relatively quick pace and stable enough for a mid 50’s guy first time out on a kayak. If you’re undecided which kayak you want, it’s a good way to try out the Hobie line as well as several other top brands, including Ocean Kayak and Malibou, maybe a few others I didn’t notice.

Thinking about getting a kayak…?

June 8th, 2011 |

Well, I’m thinking about buying a kayak. I have been kayaking a lot of the summer for the past two years with my aunt and I really like it. Problem is, I don’t have my own kayak. I don’t know what I’m supposed to be looking for in a kayak but I defianatly do not want a sit on top kayak. What is the best kind of kayak in your own experiences and about how much do they cost? What kind of kayak is the best quality for the price? What kind of things should I look for when I go to buy one and what type of store should I get it at?
Thanks guys!

Keeping bugs out of a kayak?

June 6th, 2011 |

We just bought 2 kayaks and we want to keep the bugs out when we store them. We are aware that they sell kayak cockpit covers but we wanted to try a cheaper alternative by making our own. So, we took some fabric and covered the cockpit with it, then we used some rope to tie the fabric down and hold it in place because it has a lip that goes around the entire cockpit opening. If you are not understanding what I am describing, imagine that you have a jar, a piece of seran wrap-type material, and a rubber band and you have to find a way to attach the wrapping to the jar.. What would you do? You would use the rubber band’s tension to hold down the wrapping over the jar. We used this concept with the kayak because the lip around the cockpit opening allows for a rope to create tension and hold the fabric to the kayak. I am worried that bugs will still be able to slip their way under the rope and fabric even though it is on there very snuggly… What do you think? Can bugs do amazing things like slip under really tight spaces? Do you have a better way of keeping bugs out of your kayak?

I want to learn to kayak?

June 2nd, 2011 |

I have been whitewater rafting on the Ocoee several times, and I absolutely love it. I want to try out kayaking now. I have never kayaked before, only "funyaked" - it was an inflatable kayak, maybe more like a one person raft on the Hiwassee, Tn.
I live in North Florida though so I don’t know of any places where I could try out kayaking.
Are there any places where I could rent a kayak?
If I wanted to buy one, what would be the best type to get?
What is the best way to learn how to kayak?

Where should I live in the US?

May 29th, 2011 |

I am about to finish grad school and want to move with my wife to somewhere new. There are a lot of things we know we aren’t looking for, but not necessarily what we ARE looking for. Here is a small list:

-We have lived in the south (GA) and are very tired of the Bible belt. We are not at all liberal, but not very conservative either. We are not fans of super liberal democrats or ultra conservative republicans,
-We both have master degrees in international affairs enjoy diversity. When I say diversity I mean multiple ethnicities, bot just black or white like Atlanta. We also enjoy lots of different food types.
-We love the outdoors, but also love being near the city.
-We want to move to the city, but NYC is way too expensive. We think Miami is too Latino (I am central American so please no racist comments), Atlanta is too urban, and Boston is too Caucasian.
-We love the NFL and soccer (football). We like baseball alright too, but not college sports.
-We would like to have four seasons, but definitely love the summer much more. Like I said, we love the outdoors (hiking, kayaking, swimming, camping, etc).
-We can’t do NYC or California because they are way too expensive. The southeast and Texas are too conservative. The extreme NW is too cold and far away from everything. We enjoy the pace and proximity of the NE, but haven’t been anywhere other than NYC or Boston. We have considered Colorado, but don’t want extended winters or the isolated feeling of being so far away from the coast and other major cities (besides Denver).

I realize that this there are a lot of factors here and that our options are pretty limited. Basically, anywhere NOT in the southeast, NYC, California, Northwest, or North (Washington to Michigan).
If anywhere has any tips we would greatly appreciate it. If you need any more specifics please just ask. Thank you so much!

How can I prevent my face from breaking out with acne without taking a shower?

May 27th, 2011 |

This question probably sounds VERY weird and gross. I am going on an outward bound trip in a couple of weeks. I will be out in the wilderness for 22 days and I was told there probably won’t be any opportunities to shower until we go back to base camp just on the day we end the trip. I can only bring baby wipes. I can’t bring most types of soaps and face washes because it is bad for the environment. I will be coast sailing and sea kayaking so I’ll basically be in water for a large part of the trip. Any advice on how to keep my face acne free?

NaTIVE English speakers, Please Help [10points]?

May 25th, 2011 |

Please check these four paragraphs if they’re free from errors and vague sentences. Please feel free to re-phrase if the sentence didn’t make sense :D

A-We contacted seven agencies and two airlines to know the top four most visited destinations by the Emirati families, 80 percent of the respondent listed these four destinations: Bangkok, Germany, France and London respectively.

B-The flight hours also play a role when deciding on a destination. The flight time from UAE to Germany is 6-7 hours long (Kayak, 2011). Since the UAE has well-known airways varying from Etihad to Gulf Airways, that facilitate its passengers with the best service, the distance would not be a issue for Emirati families.

C-pricing would be depending on the family members who travel. it is a custom in this society that members who have a job collaborate in spending. Means, a son who has a job would pay the money for hotel or the daughter who has a job would pay for food during their staying.

D-In Islam, certain types of food and drinks are not permissible to consume like pork and alcohol. There are numerous restaurants that offer Halal food such as Alt-Byblos restaurant in Frankfurt, Habibi in Berlin and Sababa in Munich and many more.

Where and what in Pennsylvania should I see on a road trip around the state?

May 23rd, 2011 |

I’m planning a month long road trip around all of Pennsylvania. I’m doing this for a book, weblog, and possible tv show in the future.

My question is, where and what should I make a point to go see. I’m looking for all types of places. Touristy, non-touristy, haunted, myths, nature, beauty, unique, quirky, fun, everything. State parks, odd things, natural wonders, man made wonders, family restaurants, famous/infamous places, local neat things. I also would like to know of beautiful roads to take that aren’t just interstates, unless those interstates are beautiful. Remember, we’re going to be driving so it might as well be a nice drive. This isn’t just for places that you can drive right up to. Walking, hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, etc.. all included too. Also weird and strange road side attractions. Everything in PA, inch by inch.

The concept of the book is to group the states into regions and be as in depth as possible with what there is to do in those regions. I want to give anyone wanting to take a road trip in a particular part of the country the guide to not miss great things that might be right around the corner or right off of the interstates.

I’m also looking for interesting people. If you or someone you know in the area is a really special person let me know. I will also be in need of a place to stay sometimes and to interview and "feature" special families and people across the state. If you live in PA and would like to be featured in the book, email me at driveus@rocketmail.com I will also be looking for guides and/or specialists on certain areas. So if you are particularly interested and knowledgeable about your area that you live or something in PA, I’d love to talk to you and you will get credit in the books, and maybe face time on camera. For businesses I’m also looking for sponsorship. You would get to put your name on my vehicle and have advertising.

If this goes well and is a success I’m planning on doing other states too. If you are from another state, please don’t list things other than PA, you can email me driveus@rocketmail.com

Increased appetite/weight gain since my traumatic brain injury last summer, anything I can do?

May 21st, 2011 |

I’ve always been a bit of a nervous eater, but some 5 years ago now I lost a significant amount of weight (around 80 lbs) and started exercising and working out.
I started eating healthier, too, but that’s generally speaking - I don’t turn down some good ol’ mac’n'cheese or mom’s home-baked cookies, and as a broke college student, I generally eat cheap food - like cereal and, yes, (occasionally) ramen. I never gained weight because I maintained fairly regular exercise, both for health and leisure (rock climbing, ballroom dancing, mountain biking, kayaking, things like that).

Last summer, at the end of June, I was in a car accident, and spent over a week in the hospital. When I was released, due to pain and disorientation, I naturally could not do much exercise. I really couldn’t do anything significant, except for go on long walks - and that even hurt after a while, and tired me out significantly. It was a couple of months before I could really lift anything heavy, and about the same amount of time before I could jog for more than a couple of minutes without pain.
I went to physical therapy for about a month, where I was given a stretch/band exercise program, and that helped a bit. I did an exercise bike with just my arms for a while, too, which was decent exercise.

Two of the biggest things since the accident, and up until even now, have been:
1. Extreme fatigue. Doing anything. If I read for an hour, I get tired. If I go on a 10-15 minute jog (which at least I can do now), I’m spent. Doing 30lb. curls for a few minutes exhausts me (I used to be up to 40, though now I can do 35 sometimes). I used to pull all-nighters for a few days on end, and now I can hardly stay awake for a normal working day - I take at least one nap a day (sometimes - rarely - I go a day without napping, now), depending on what I’m doing, for as long as 2 hours at a time.
2. Increase in appetite. I’ve found that I am hungry all the time since my accident. Even when I was in the hospital, I ordered several meals, even if they weren’t huge, I’d eat a bowl of cream of wheat every couple of hours.
Previously, 1 bowl of cereal like Special K or Raisin Bran would get me going in the morning. I wake up with enough of an appetite to eat 4 bowls of cereal in the morning - and sometimes I do. Doesn’t really matter what kind, but I can eat 3 bowls of some really filling stuff (like mini-wheats).

I used to graze a lot on fruit and such; I still do, but my normal, small lunch of, say, a PBJ or turkey sandwich doesn’t seem like enough.

I’ve returned to doing some light exercise daily or every other day (I’m still a bit off-balance, still get fatigued pretty easily, and am still getting therapy for my back, so some days I experience discomfort enough to deter me from some exercises).
I’ve also started trying to curb my appetite by telling myself "enough" after one or two bowls of cereal, or a sandwich. This, however, does leave me still feeling hungry (my stomach rumbles). I still catch myself overeating from time to time, or grazing a bit much (sometimes on unhealthy foods, too, like some kinds of crackers, or cookies), but I’m working on it.
But, like I said - I still feel hungry all the time.

As a result from all of this, I have lost a somewhat significant amount of muscle mass (as mentioned above with the weightlifting), tone, and gained some weight (I’m 5′10", I used to weigh in at about 175lbs., and am now about 170lbs. with a small gut, which I didn’t used to have AT ALL).

What are some things that I can do to make myself stop feeling this hungry? I spoke with one doctor who said that this often happens to people who sustain certain types of traumatic brain injuries, but he did not give me advice other than to try and curb my appetite, myself (as I am), or prescribe anything for me to take. I am still seeing him, and other doctors as well - is there anything I might bring up to them, or anything that people here might suggest?

Inexpensive Rod/Reel Combo for Inshore Saltwater Fishing?

May 19th, 2011 |

Hi all,

I’ve been saltwater fishing pretty consistently for about 2 years now and really love it, but I’m in need of a new (and inexpensive) rod/reel combo. I’m a poor law student and I’m always at my family’s beach house during breaks. I just got a kayak, so I’ll be doing a lot of inshore fishing in Mobile Bay within the next two weeks. I also fish from sandbars in the Gulf, so I’m looking for something that will stand up to different types of fish, from ladyfish and whiting to red bulls and flounder. My price limit is around 0 for both the rod and reel, but the cheaper the better. I just want to get the most bang for my buck. I like Daiwa rods and my Shimano 4000 spinning reel, but I’m open to trying a baitcasting reel as well. I’ve heard great things about Daiwa, Penn, and Abu gear.

What’s the best option for me?

Thanks in advance for your advice!!

What is the best whitewater rafting trip near Las Vegas?

May 17th, 2011 |

Im planning on going to LV for my bachelor party next May-June. I was wondering if you locals could recommend an awesome white water rafting company excursion that my buddies and I could take while out there. We’d probably go out there for a long weekend, and stay on the strip. Not looking for an all day trip, hopefully just 4-6 hours of excitement so we can get back to gambling. On an experience level- most of us have kayaks and have been on white waters a handful of times. The more life threatening the better in my opinion. We do want to try out a large raft-type of craft rather than kayaks however. Is the Colorado River an option?

website links appreciated- thanks!

I don't understand why things are like this?

May 13th, 2011 |

We’ll start this off with I’m 17 and I’ve never had a girlfriend. I know this isn’t a huge deal, but it is a little depressing and doesn’t help my self esteem. The best I’ve done is gone on two dates with a girl and we kissed twice. Long story short, she opted to get back together with her ex boyfriend who is out of state. It crushed me, but this was ~7 months ago. Everything seemed great, I had finally found someone that I thought showed a genuine interest in me too, and our dates were great. She was my first date and my first kiss, pretty sad for a 17 year old. Aside from that, I’ve only had a handful of girls that ever showed any interest in me, I went to a dance with one of them, but she has never been in a relationship either and seems a little too innocent and doesn’t know how to act in that kind of situation. She’s sweet, but she just doesn’t know how that stuff works. Her best friend has been showing interest lately, but she isn’t really my type. Her face is pock-marked pretty bad and she wears too much makeup to try and hide it. Plus her dad is a creep and hits on my mom. Otherwise, I don’t usually get much attention from girls. I’m positive I fall too much into the nice guy/friend category and this drives me insane. I can’t stand seeing nice girls dating jerks, and I can’t bring myself down to their level just to get girls to like me, as that just feels wrong. I feel like I’ve got a lot of good qualities, but for some reason girls just don’t notice me? I’m 5′6", short brown hair, brown eyes, I work out (I look toned, not obsessed about being like Arnold), I love the outdoors (camping, going to the beach, skiing, dirt biking, kayaking, hiking, etc), I’m a varsity golfer, I’m chivalrous, I like all kinds of music except for country, I have a cool car (1974 Ford Maverick, a muscle car for you non-car types), I have a job, and I have a great group of friends. I see my friends that are in relationships and I just feel so left out. I can never go on group dates or anything, and I feel so alone. I feel like I’m really missing out on a big part of growing up, I really don’t want to get to college and never have had a girlfriend. I suppose I don’t really know where to meet girls, as the only ones I really know are girls from school.

I know I’m not ugly or anything, but is there something visually that I am missing? Here are a few pictures, the second one is of the first girl I mentioned and I before homecoming (her face is covered since I doubt she wants pictures of her posted on the internet.

If there’s something obviously wrong with me, feel free to point it out.

Thanks

I don't understand why things are like this?

May 9th, 2011 |

If I have some obvious flaw that I am clearly not seeing, please feel free to point it out. Thanks for your help.
I’m not looking for sex or a short fling, I’d like to meet someone that I could be in a descent length relationship with. As long as it could last.
In reference to the clothes thing, that picture is from homecoming and I don’t care who you are, not tucking in a dress shirt makes you look like an idiot at a formal event.

What to start out with exercising?

May 7th, 2011 |

Hey everyone, I’ve decided to pay for fitness center access in my dorm. (Finally have time to use it)

I am going to try and get fit for the summer and a campus kayaking club. I’m not in the best shape… never did high endurance sports, mostly stuck with racket sports (tennis, racketball, ect), golf, fishing, band, ect in high school.

Now, this aside, I am focusing more on muscle development/endurance more so than weight loss. Thing is, I have tried things like this numerous times.. and normally lose interest/determination to reach the goal I set for myself. ATM I am 6′ 4.5", and about 230 lb. *bit overweight, I know*

So, my question is.. what types of exercises would be easy to start out with… such as type, number of reps/sets, ect?

Also, what is a good way to keep motivation in the long run?

When is the best time to buy Air Fare tickets for March?

May 5th, 2011 |

I’m planning a trip out to Austin, TX for a Music Conference that goes from March 15th to March 21st. I’m planning to arrive there on March 14th & plan to leave (or get back here to NYC) on March 21st (I’m not planning to go to the last event of the conference.). I’ve checked Priceline, Travelocity, etc. Most of them have expensive prices like 9 round trip on either Priceline or Travelocity (I don’t remember which one.). Although, when I went to Kayak.com I saw 0 Airfare & couldn’t believe what I was seeing (I chose Hotwire & some other Low Fare engine to compare each other to that Kayak.com has you do.). Now, I’m assuming the Air Fare is Actually 0 WITHOUT the Hotel?? Right? I mean, last yr. I went to Nashville (late July) & I paid 7 from Orbitz.com, but wasn’t aware that even though I was checking under the Lowest Fares under the "Flight & Hotel" Category I thought 7 INCLUDED the Hotel Stay (Duhhh…etc.). Only to learn that when I got to Nashville I found out that the Hotel was SEPARATE from the Air Fare. SO…etc.:

1) When is the Best time to purchase these Air Fare (& Hotel) Tickets for my March trip (now, Jan., Feb. or 1st week of March) for a LOW - CHEAP PRICE (Under 0)?

2) What IS a Travel Package - How does this work?
OR
3) What does a "Flight & Hotel" Category do for you when it seems like I was paying SEPARATELY (Hotel & Air Fare)?

*****I’m not looking to Sight See. I’m going down there to look for any opportunities in the Recording Studio & Music Scene. I’ve heard that there’s A Lot of Live Music (Bands) down there AND A Lot of other Diff. Types of Music (It’s a "Business Trip". Not a Vacation.).

Please let me know. I really don’t know how this system works.

Any Help would be appreciated.

FPV: EECHS’ MCNC 2011 Cardboard Kayak Race

May 4th, 2011 |

Edgecombe Early College High School hosted MCNC 2011 in Tarboro, NC. On Saturday, Day 4, 4 teams (4 different grade levels) went head to head racing cardboard kayaks they made throughout the semester! Green boat: Seniors (1st place) Black and Red: Super Seniors (2nd place) ‘Camo’: Sophomores (3rd place) Red and Gold: Freshman (4th place) (Juniors were unable to finish their boat) Although the seniors won, we were cheering for the sophomores Patrick and Hector (as you can hear) Sorry for the camera shaking and unfocused on the race, we were too busy cheering!
