Kayaking: What Do You Need Besides a Kayak?

July 30th, 2011 |

Kayaking: What Do You Need to Get Started? - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. I tell people that the initial package for kayaking is a kayak, a paddle, and a life jacket. All three of them are a necessity that you need when you kayak. Anything after that starts to become additional equipment that you an always purchase, but those three you need to have. Like the kayaks, life jackets come in a variety of different sizes and colors and shapes and things as well. But basically there are literally life jackets designed for kayakers. They have bigger arm holes, for being able to move your arms more. In some cases they have high reflectivity. They have soft straps so that when you are in a kayak and sitting, you don’t have these straps sticking up into your face. And they are literally designed for kayaking and different size people. All of them of course have to be Coast Guard approved and they are noted to be manufactured. So the life jacket is a very important thing to have. One thing you want to always remember is that you are going to have this is your hand every second of the time that you are paddling. So I sort of preach the fact that you should find something that is going to be comfortable for you to be able to handle all the time. That it will be the right length that it is suppose to be so that it meets your height. And also the materials themselves of what the paddles are made from varies just as much the materials for when you are buying a kayak. You can

Kayak Types for First Time Kayak Buyers

July 26th, 2011 |

Kayaking: What to Know When Buying a Kayak - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. My name is Steve Gibons and I am with Scappoose Bay Kayaking here in Oregon. We are an organization that has been here for about the last 11 years, and we are here to help people out in regards to buying kayaks. My understanding is that you would like to know a little bit about kayaks. And the first thing that we always ask people when they are interested in buying a boat is two things. What do you see yourself doing in the kayak? If you are just looking for something that you are going to use a couple times during the summer, well then of course you might not be interested in a larger investment. But if you find, which you will, that you really enjoy kayaking, then there is different degrees of kayaks that you might be interested in buying as well, and it can go right from the very beginning all the way to the more expensive boats. What I mean by that is, is in the early stages, a basic beginner kayak, is what we call a recreational kayak. A recreational kayak is a boat that has a large cockpit, which is what this opening is. It is very easy to get in and out of, it is adaptable to all sizes of kids and adults. It is very stable, it is relatively a little heavier than some other materials. It is made out of a plastic, what we call a milk bottle plastic or a polyethylene plastic, and to keep its structural integrity, because of the material, it has to be made very thick in order to stay

What activities can I do in the South Island of New Zealand besides these?

July 23rd, 2011 |

hi there,

So I’ve asked a very similar question to this but I figure I’ll put more info in this one so you don’t have to write me a novel. I’m studying abroad a semester (Jan-May) and want to try and experience everything without feeling like I missed out on something. I’ll definately be studying in the South Island so I want to know if theres anything you can think of that I should/must do, see, experience, etc. Here’s what I’ve come up with..

Punakaiki-
•Pancake Rocks
•blowholes
Christchurch-
•“Garden City”- Botanical Gardens
•Rangitata Rafts- peel forest south Canterbury
•Hot air balloon
•Hanmer Springs Thermal pools and Spa- 90n min. north
Glacier Country-
•Fox Glacier
•Franz Josef Glacier- Glacier pool jump
•Okarito Lagoon kayak
•Scenic skydive/flight
Fiordland National Park-
•Milford Sound- Mitre Peak

•Mirror Lakes
•Doubtful Sound
•Milford Road

•Abel Tasman National Park
o Harwood’s hole and starlight cave
oTandem hang-gliders
oMicrolight flights
•Waikoropupu freshwater springs and clay
•Kaiteriteri Beach
Queenstown-
•Nevis Bungee Jump
•Shotover Jet
•Luge Ride
•River Rafting
•Deer Park Heights
•The Bunker Restaurant
•skydive
•Lake Wakatipu sunset
•White water rafting

Wanaka-
•Ski town
•Haast Pass Blue Pool
•snowboarding
Kaikoura-
•Whale watching
•Swim with dolphins
•Kayak/swim with seals
•Deep sea fishing
Dunedin-
•Cathedral Caves
•Manorburn dam fishing- central otago
•Moeroki Beach
oMarble Boulder rocks
oBlue and yellow eyed penguins
oSeal colony
Southland-
•Fly fishing
•Slope point- south pole sign
•Invercargill- curio bay
oLow tide
oFossilized trunks
oHectors dolphins- Porpoise Bay

I know it may seem a bit extensive but I honestly want to know ANYTHING that will be worth my while here. I’m so excited to go and would appreciate any and all feedback you have. I’ll most likely be going to school in Dunedin (ChCh as a backup), so if there’s certain things other than those I already mentioned in those cities that’d be helpful considering I’ll be broke after I do all these things… gah:)
Thank you so much, it means alot that you’re helping me out with this!

Tandem Kayak Attempts To Punch Huge Hole!

July 16th, 2011 |

Using a Jackson Kayak “Dynamic Duo” two person whitewater kayak, Micah Kneidl and Tyler Allyn attempt to punch the “Seemore” hole in Slalom Rapid on the South Fork of the Payette at approximately 10000cfs. After hitting the worst part of the massive hole and disappearing, they emerge in impressive fashion but are launched back into the hole. At this time, Tyler is completely ripped from the boat and from his sprayskirt. Micah’s skirt implodes and he is also forced to swim. The run-out is big water class 4.

The girls kayaking on Lake Del Valle, CA ~ Hobie Oasis

July 12th, 2011 |

Not a pro video, just recording some family fun. We rented kayaks on Lake Del Valle from Sunrise Mountain Sports www.sunrisemountainsports.com They’re easy and quick to deal with and we had a lot of fun. Rentals included all safety gear and paddles. Bring your own camera, drink and snacks ! We tried out two different yaks, I took the Hobie Revolution out and the girls tried out the Hobie Oasis, approx. 09 / 10 models, both with foot powered Mirage drives of course. Two girls from Paris, Nathalie and Emmanuelle, they loved it, although for me now I have to compare some others, the Outback for one… I will say the Revolution with Turbo fins, albeit with some effort at first, was easy to settle into a relatively quick pace and stable enough for a mid 50’s guy first time out on a kayak. If you’re undecided which kayak you want, it’s a good way to try out the Hobie line as well as several other top brands, including Ocean Kayak and Malibou, maybe a few others I didn’t notice.

How to lose weight at home?

July 11th, 2011 |

Here’s the thing:

I made a pact to lose 20 lbs. this summer (I’m 6′ tall and currently weigh 198 lbs.). Starting mid-June, I began kayaking, swimming, and running for a couple hours a day with my dog, Shippou. She is very high energy, and is truly the reason I started trying to get myself into shape. During workouts with the pup between working full time, I managed to lose almost 8 lbs. in a little over two weeks. :)

… Then the dog blew out her knee. She’s facing 12 weeks of convalescence and no more than 5 minute walks per day beginning after week 6. I’m pretty much tied to the house taking care of my little girl until long after summer is over. :(

What are some intense, cardio exercises that I can do in the house with no additional equipment? Leaving the critter at home while I go out really isn’t an option. I’m already missing swimming in all this hot weather! D:

Any suggestions?

My brother showed me a website a few years ago that exclusively sold one item each day. These items were usually outdoor equipment like tents, kayaks, hiking boots, bicycles etc etc. But it was only one item each day, like an overstock situation. Any thoughts?
